GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT CONNEMARAS

Connemaras are the largest of the native pony breeds, and come from Ireland. They are hardy, easy-keepers, and are generally very fond of their people friends. A quality Connemara should have the attributes listed in the standard for the breed: | |

They should be mannerly and manageable, kind, responsive, possessing good sense and basic intelligence | |

They should be rugged and sturdy in type, with a compact body that is deep through the heart girth, with a well-sprung rib cage, and broad chest. | |
|
Their action should be straight and true, both front and rear, with free movement in the shoulders. They should move underneath themselves and be sure-footed, athletic, and clever, covering a lot fo ground. | |

They should have a kind eye, and a well-shaped head that is balanced and in proportion to the rest of the body, with a neck of good length and definition, meeting the shoulder smoothly. | |

The shoulders should be well laid-back with a good slope and their backs should be strong and muscular. Their hindquarters should be well-rounded and deep with good length from the point of the hip through the haunch. | |

They should have good, clean, flat bone, measuring at least 7 - 8 inches for those under 14.2 and more for those over that height. Their forearms and gaskins should be long and muscular while their cannons are short, and there should be no deviation of the cannon bone as it comes out of the knee. | |

Their joints should be large and well defined, and their feet should be hard and strong. | |
